GRAFT was commissioned to design a villa on the tip of a cliff facing the southern Tuscan archipelago. The site sits underneath the ruins of an ancient Roman city, which governed the area 2000 years ago from its acropolis, 113 meters above sea level.

The villa’s design aims to fluidly connect architecture and landscape whilst framing the views to the spectacular Thyrrenian Sea. When entering the estate through its garden entrance, the view on the villa blends seamlessly into the landscape. A staircase leads onto a grand terrace overlooking the sea. The visitor is invited to climb up another flight of stairs to a terrace featuring a 360-degree view.

The building with its stairs and terraces works like a domesticated landscape, covered with Pozzolana in travertine and earthy material and colors found on site, staging the views into the sunsets over the sea and the surrounding mountains.

Villa A itself is organized in split levels, so that each ascending or descending movement offers a new perspective towards the water horizon.
